South Central MN
Other side to the tumble story was they started to once they hit something or penetrated the target. If they hit something like a watermelon, water jug, yote ect. the bullet would travel into what it hit a bit, then begin to tumble, and because of the forces involved it would tear the bullet apart making one heck of a messy wound. Now if something was between the target and rifle, it would start to tumble when it hit the obstacle and accuracy was lost.
However heavier, slower bullets fired from a shorter barrel would not perform like the fast, light ones fired from a longer barrel so didn't tumble. Or so the claim went that the 55 gr. outperformed the 62 gr. bullets in actual combat.
I could see how a longer barrel bolt action rifle would send it screaming downrange a lot faster than the auto/semiauto M4 with a shorter barrel since it isn't siphoning off some of the combustion gas to cycle the action as well as the longer barrel allowing for more "burn" time.
