Subject: Some more WWII history

Morgan Co. Illinois
My maternal grandmother's youngest brother. Harry Darush, was a Seabee serving in the Pacific. Before tearing down an old barn I found these papers that were published on the USS Pennsylvania BB 38 as he was one of many hitching a ride back to the States after VJ Day. The Pennsylvania was the flagship of the US fleet in WWI. She was in drydock at Pearl on Dec. 7 1941 and hit by one bomb. One of the first to return fire that day and the first battleship to sail out she served the rest of the war. On Aug 12 1945, three days before Hirohito surrendered, a single Japanese torpedo plane slipped through and scored a hit putting a 30 foot hole in her making her the last battleship to be damaged in the war. She was patched up good enough to steam home to Bremerton Washington with a bunch of passengers.
