I’m retired but still driving a pickup truck. For me, the best balance seems to be buying new and trading just before 100K. In 17 I traded my 13 and paid about 22 cents/mile. 17 up to 22 I traded for a quarter a mile but that included going up from quad cab to full four door.
I can live with that and no repair bills, one set of tires at about 60K.
