South Central Kansas | My first time planting was with a 2 row John Deere lister planting double crop milo on once disked wheat stubble driving a 1957 620 narrow front, probably around 1961 or 62.. I had watched Dad many times and he laid off the field, almost half mile rows and let me go. The lister was a trip rope lift so that complicated things a bit. Pretty sure we were applying starter fertilizer too. Anyway, the milo came up fine, crooked rows and all. The field wasn't right by a road so not everyone driving by could see my work.
Dad bought a brand new 494A planter in 1964 and that was a big deal. He wanted a 4 row lister but Deere had quit making them by then. I used that 494A after Dad retired until 1993 whenI bought a used 800 IH Cyclo. I used that planter for 8 years and traded it for a one year old used 955 Case IH Cyclo. Both excellent planters and I no tilled almost every acre with both of them.
In 2023 I bought a new Harvest International from a local farmer dealer with all the bells and whistles. E-sets, down force, air operated clean sweeps and liquid fertilizer. Whew, what a change from the old planters.
