Chatham Ontario. | Nobody touched the planter except my dad on our farm. But I was always there in the spring when ever I could be helping load fertilizer or seed. Learned alot from dad but couldn't get experience til I worked for a neighbor. Dad planted so straight that I harvested a 30 acre field of corn one year all on the guess row, didn't know it till the last pass.
The fellow I worked for had a buddy get behind one spring and wanted to hire me to plant beans. I'm thinking I was 17. 5600(?) Ford gasser on a 7100 7 row lift assist tool bar. I had lots of experience driving tractor but never planted a field start to finish. He showed me the rig, told me which gear to run in pointed at the field then left. Didn't talk to him till I was done that night after dark. I had a good day and he was happy but didn't realize that was my first field I ever planted. That was sure a load for that tractor and I think I was in about a 6 mph gear cause I got over alot of acres. Could see the baffles on the inside of the muffler after dark it ran so hot. | |
