Here and There
8, 9 or 10. I had field cultivated for several years and mowed the yard alone since I was 5 after my dad did the first pass along the edges. ...same with the field cultivator.
Listened to my dad cuss my grandpa for his planter mistakes since I could remember so when I got my chance I did my best to learn quick. I had also ridden and watched both my grandpa and dad's every move for an unrealistic number of hours for a kid. ...days of no money for child care so I went to the field. Rode with neighbors and watched how and what they did and absorbed it like a sponge.
8630 4-wd and 16 row JD 7000 corn. And IH 1066 and Great Plains drill. ...I remember being horrified to hear one day while I was planting soybeans that my 2 yrs older sister had hit a tree with the corn planter marker in the middle of one of my dad's rented fields. ...I guess it only broke the sheer bolt and my dad laughed. I was scared ****less of him back then, so that's why he probably let me learn so early ...that and he had almost no help since my grandpa worked an off-farm job full-time and only had gotten a chance to farm in the later half of his life. ..my sister and I were also running the 9600 combines at 9 or 10 yrs old. Seat safety switch bypassed with stearn warning to never leave the cab without shutting the header off.

I have a 4.5 year old son now and I doubt he will be doing any of those things until much older. He still struggles to drive the golf cart straight-lol. ...he's a much more balanced kid who loves life and his daddy, but doesn't idolize him like I did my dad. It's for the best, it wasn't so great the way my relationship turned out with my father.
