Mid-Missouri's possible wildfire disaster

Ground zero for severe urban wildfire concerns in Missouri is Lebanon.

Lebanon's wildfire likelihood is higher than 84% of communities in the nation, and 99% higher than other communities in Missouri, according to the US Forest Service's "Wildfire Risk to Communities" dataset.

An estimated 1,714 buildings within the city are at risk of being ignited by nearby flammable vegetation, while 4,859 other structures could be ignited by indirect sources, including embers and home-to-home fire spread. All of the community's 6,838 homes, businesses, and infrastructure have a "major" risk of being affected by wildfire over the next 30 years, data from the Risk Factor climate risk tool shows.

Lebanon also has an especially vulnerable population, which makes it more difficult for some residents to prepare for, respond to, and recover from severe wildfires. More than 18% of the city's population has at least one disability, more than 15% are over 65 years old, and around 11% live in poverty, according to the USFS data. Nearly 10% of the community's households also do not have access to a vehicle.
