Eating too often and/or too much foods that raise insulin, over time causing insulin resistance. What foods raise insulin? Carbohydrates. Fat no. Protein only very modest.
Insulin is the body's switch to tell it to either burn glucose or fat for its primary fuel. High insulin makes it almost impossible to burn body fat for energy. Snacking all day on carby snacks is a recipe for gaining body fat.
