southern MN | This is entirely different, and a very tiny scale, but it may relate to your question?
I sell a little bit of hay and straw. Pickup load, not semi load type stuff.
Went to one hay auction. Unloaded some small squares of straw. Auction office was all, hey, nice, that should sell well, ohhh…
Auction day, my 2 bundles of straw sold for $1.10 a bale. To the auctioneer. As they circled around the end to the next row of hay, I overheard 2 different folk arranging to buy some straw from the auctioneer. I believe I heard a price starting with a 2….
Never took anything to that hay auction again, and I am much much more thoughtful trying to bid at any of their machinery auctions.
Another hay auction I take a few bales to, the fella running it is pretty matter of fact, some weeks are good, some are bad, it’s an auction. Twice he bought my hay, once was for a buyer, other time I don’t know. Both times I was quite pleased with the price, and I hope he is bidding on my stuff in the future.
So….. I don’t care who is bidding on or buying my stuff at the auction. In one example I do not feel I was represented as a seller, I think I was taken advantage of. In the other example I think I was treated well as a seller.
