Subject: Hay millet advice.

I think the crop talk guys must all be on vacation. How are you guys keeping sand burrs out of your hay millet? We had been buying a lot of our millet hay from a neighbor. I know he plants sometime in July and doesn’t pick it up until September. And its easily 30% sandburs. Our sheep are covered in burrs and the cattle are having a hard time picking through it. We were going to try to drill some ourselves this year. I was going to try drilling it in mid June in hopes to get it up ahead of the sandburrs and maybe chop it in early August instead of baling it.

Our rain is in May/June sitting on 6 to 8 inches of rain in Northeast Colorado. The stuff we had been buying is typically about 9% protein, energy is in the mid .5s. I know it could be a lot better than that, but it has to actually rain. I’m wondering if we drill earlier to catch that rain and It might punch those numbers up. People here won’t typically fertilize hay millet after dryland corn. No idea why.
