Speaking for hogs, feed efficiency gains have nearly kept pace with increased slaughter weights.

What I'm saying is, it doesn't take all that much more feed to produce a 300 lb hog than it did to produce a 240 lb hog 30 years ago.   

It also doesn't take any more days on feed as daily gain has been steadily increasing as well.  Which is where a good portion of the feed efficiency increase has come from, you have more pounds of gain to go against the maintenance calories.
