Kingston,Mi | On YouTube and an icon showed up for "L4 and LST31 carrier takeoff" or similar. During the invasion of southern France someone or group of aviators proposed to convert one LST (landing Ship Tank or also known as Large Slow Target) into a mini aircraft carrier for the Army's small spot plane the L4 Piper. The video is about 7 minutes long, shows the Army and Navy loading the L4s and then the aircraft taxing down a 200 ft. long by possibly 10 or 12 ft. wide run way while the LST was "speeding" into the wind.
Search for "L4 and LST 31". One more weird, wacky and successful aircraft carrier conversion to go with the coal fired, sidewheeler flattops of Lake Michigan.
