Faunsdale, AL | The thing is it doesn’t always blow up. That leaves room for complacency even when you know it has happened
I welded on some reinforcing plates in the center of a pair of grain cart wheels. Welds were a few inches away from the rim itself which was a foot away (approximately) from each bead seat. Knowing what was possible and having tubes to protect, I made sure to weld and then cool with water, then weld another area on the opposite side.
Contrast that with another patch job where I welded the rim with cracked and worn bolt on lugs solid to the center of a MFWD wheel. That one was welding on the rim directly and a lot closer to the beads of the tire……..tire came off…….no way I could mitigate the heat transfer.
I had welded on cracked rims with tires mounted before I knew it could cause an explosion, so when I first learned about the danger, it impressed me how much risk I had taken. | |
