There aren't really specifics to the zapper other than it's best to hit it earlier than later (young sappy weeds kill easier than old woody ones). A heavy infestation will take 2 passes several weeks apart minimum. Soil moisture makes a difference. I custom zap heavy rag fields from 2.5-4mph with 390hp on what's usually a 30ft bar if weeds are heavy. A zapper can absolutely rescue a soybean crop you can't even see under the rag, but as you mentioned, prevention is best.

These pics are from last summer. Rag on right was zapped about 16hrs earlier the previous day.
