Subject: Stone vs mulch

Grundy County, IL
We are doing some landscaping around the house this spring. When I bought the place it just had some badly overgrown ewe hedges that had to be removed, and only bare dirt around them.

Wondering what the consensus is on river rock/river pebble vs mulch. I don't want to have to replace mulch every year as it breaks down and it invites termites and earwigs. I have heard some people say that rock will retain too much heat and harm the plants, but others say they have had it for years with no problems.

I'm still making up a list of the plants we will have. I'll be using all perennials.
