Wisconsin | If you ever get to far Northeast Iowa, Lansing has a nature interpretive center that also has a lot of history, including some of the black hawk war, 1812, etc. The Winnebago were put in Iowa to separate the Sioux and Potowattami I think it was, the Winnebago (Hochunk, Hokok or other name they prefer) were "bad ass", neither the whites nor the "British Band" under Black Hawk messed with the Winnebago. The Sioux and Potowattami hated each other, so the govt forced the Winnebago in between because neither would mess with them, except apparently the Sioux tried.
Fort Crawford at Prairie du Chein also has excellent history of the wars and settlement. PdC also the site of probably the last scalping of a white in WI. Or go to Viroqua for one of the last lynchings in WI, 1888. | |
