100% incorrect, the tire breaks down CHEMICALLY with heat and pressure, creating more heat and pressure, it's a run away reaction that the tire can't contain at elevated temp and weakened chemical material.

As CC points out below, the danger is not just welding, it's anything to do with pressure and a hot tire. Use that info how you'd like, personally I think a valve CORE removed is not enough to be safe, and not sure how you remove the valve stem without breaking the bead, in which case you should stick a couple 2x4's in there, and I would be comfortable welding that.
