Franklinton, LA | I did a quick web search for "Spanish Moss" and I still don't know the answer to your question. However, the article I read claimed that Spanish Moss was not a parasite. I am not sure if I believe that.
I wonder if the Spanish Moss grew on the trees because they were old and weak. On the other hand, did the Spanish Moss grow on the trees and make them weak?
