S.E. Washington | Here’s the way I read the pyrolysis works. It’s not the initial pressure build up that causes the explosion. It’s that flammable or explosive gases from the rubber and paint are building up inside the wheel and tire. Then, the gases combine with the oxygen inside to create a combustion chamber….waiting for a spark through a crack or a hotspot and BOOM. So no, pulling the stem may not be enough. Breaking down a bead and wedging it open “should” allow enough air to circulate to prevent an explosion, even if it did flash there won’t be an overpressure of a tire.
Another way to think of it, fill a tire with ether, leaving just the valve stem out. Think it’s safe to weld on? NO, because the gases inside are the issue, not just pressure.
