Around here anyways, as time goes on, the average age of powered farm equipment used on farms continues to get older.
I missed seeing this last statement last night. That's the case here too, that the average age is constantly getting older. New equipment is being added to the overall fleet in the area, and some older stuff is being scrapped; but that's resulting in MORE tractors around, not merely NEWER tractors. This definitely applies to tractors, but also to pickups to a more limited degree.
The simplest example of this is skidsteers. In 1980, the only skidsteers around would have been on the farms that were doing well and could afford new ones. Those same farms own new ones today too. But there's now so many old skidsteers around that a lot of homeowners with a few wooded acres own an older skidsteer themselves. They aren't worthless, like you might expect from a 45-year-old piece of equipment. But their price cap is set by supply and demand, and there's still more homeowners and hobbyist farmers who want them then there are machines out there. |
