It may be interesting to check the 1840 and 1850 census records of some of the larger northern cities. You might be surprised that some of the wealthy northern families had slaves as domestic servants.
Most people are surprised that some the south LA Catholic Churches owned slaves and some of the black plantation owners had slaves.
