Franklinton, LA | This morning we went to Fontainebleau State Park which is on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain. About 200 years back this park was a sugarcane plantation with a large sugar mill. The park has some wild iris which are now in bloom plus a lot of old hurricane battered live oak trees. Most of the oak trees have a parasite commonly called Spanish Moss. A long, long time ago this moss was used to stuff mattresses and furniture.
During the past 75 - 100 years a lot of the marsh east and southeast of New Orleans has eroded away. This area now gets flooded with salt water when we get a minor hurricane. This salt water will eventually kill a lot of the grass, live oaks and other trees. Some of this land will then erode away.
