Well it is a surprise……….. to them. They have been lucky enough to not have had the virus introduced into their mostly unvaccinated community for a period of years.

Now it’s there and it may be too late to get vaccinated and head off the disease even if you decided to change your stance on vaccination. No harm in getting vaccinated in an outbreak, it’s not going to make it worse and for some it will come early enough to lessen the severity of the disease or possibly prevent it completely.

Measles isn’t disfiguring enough to be taken seriously. People can rationalize the deaths of children, apparently. Small pox was disfiguring and it’s the only virus we have successfully eliminated from the planet. We are a basically stupid species.
