Subject: RE: School Mascots in Illinois

WCIL

I saw a list one time of current HS mascots in Illinois.   I believe it was like 44 teams affected by:  Indians,  Warriors,  Braves and Chiefs.  .   I've heard that the Winnebago Indians have given their blessing to Winnebago Schools.  ( Although,  I'll add the picture they use is NOT a flattering picture of an Indian.)   It only makes sense for Oregon to use the Blackhawks,  with Chief Blackhawk overlooking the town.   Hopefully the Chicago Blackhawks  pass muster too.    Heard an interview with a Republican lawmaker talking about the cost to change a mascot.   During consolidation talks a quote was, "the hardest thing to kill in Illinois, is a mascot".

I'd like to suggest any school that decides to keep a native American mascot have a small display at the gym entry paying respect to the tribes that once inhabited the area.   I grew up a Meredosia-Chambersburg  Indian.   Meredosia was named after the area tribe that inhabited the area.  The Indian mascot isn't used too much anymore due to cooping with Triopia.

Heaven forbid that the Illinois Legislators work on something important like:  pension debt,  a balanced budget, or dealing with crime.
