Gambrel Roof is what the design is.There are a few homes still built that way.Loose hay as stated was the reason and the length of available timbers.Many Gambrel roof barns are failing here.The cost of upkeep on large barns is scary high.side story...My mom/dad had a gambrel roofed lake house.They sold it and the next owner disliked the looks.He hired a contractor to remove the arch and put a conventional peaked roof on.They took off the top.They did not look at the weather forecast,,it rained 2 inches during the night..They still built the roof.House became full of mold,,uninhabitable now for a decade...they should have learned to like it I suppose...
