Wisconsin | Yes, loose hay was hauled with a hoist and track, so the peak had to be high. They originally had wood shingles, so the flat part would tend to leak if it was too long a slope and you'd have to pitch a lot more hay to fill to the roof with a lower slope roof all the way across. The outward pressure on the walls was another factor. Tall walls would have more pressure than a tall roof at an angle that matched the "angle of repose" of the hay.
I don't know if snow ever entered into the equation, they were usually so full of posts compared to a modern shed that snow was not much of a factor. Extreme heavy snow is very local, lake effect areas for instance. | |
