That's what 2007 2008 was.
Government policy, regulations, and failure to identify and act created the environment for exactly that to happen. Much ground work was laid the previous 20 years via government "fixing" things.
You are presently experiencing government attempting to fix the things that have occurred these most recent 20 years, and go another 20 years before that too.
Unless one does not think anything needs to be fixed. In which case yes, you can say it is self inflicted. The world can simply continue as it has been with more and more expansion of debt (exponential now) to fix everything. When it hasn't worked for the last 40 years, you may as well expect it to work pretty soon.
