The mistake was slapping tariffs on everyone else along with China. Now many of those other countries are going to align with China on trade which in turn strengthens China's position in this trade war and weakens ours.
I'm not saying you're necessarily wrong............merely that any country wishing to align with China is going to get exactly what they deserve.
I actually think someone got into Trumps ear and they May reverse coarse and want to work with other countries against China. Which makes more sense than just tariff everyone approach he was doing.
