The mistake was slapping tariffs on everyone else along with China. Now many of those other countries are going to align with China on trade which in turn strengthens China's position in this trade war and weakens ours. The rest of the world will no longer stand with us on much of anything. There is an attitude around here of "Screw the rest of the world"! We don't need them. Unfortunately isolationism has historically proved to be a bad course to pursue. If he had gone at just China and leaned diplomatically on the rest of the world to back us I think he would have been far more successful. As it stands his MO of bully and bluff is being horrifically exposed and possibly causing serious damage that will take years to repair.
