Kansas City, Missouri | So my family and I went to see the new Minecraft movie this weekend thinking it’d be a fun little outing. We’re casual Minecraft fans—not hardcore—but figured the kids would enjoy it.
Right from the start, the crowd was a little rowdy. Folks were yelling out random lines before scenes even started. Some were quoting the trailers, others were shouting stuff like “Steve would never!” or “You gotta smelt that first!” It was annoying, sure, but I figured hey, it's a movie based on a video game—probably comes with the territory. I could deal with it.
But then came the Chicken Jockey scene. I don’t know what kind of cultural moment this is turning into, but when that little zombie came riding out on that chicken, people in the theater went absolutely ape **** crazy. It was like someone hit a switch—popcorn flying, slushies launched like grenades, kids screaming, grown adults chanting “CHICKEN JOCKEY! CHICKEN JOCKEY!” like they were at some kind of underground fight club.
One guy up front stood on his seat and just started yelling the word “canon event” over and over. People were recording with their phones, jumping around, it felt more like a mosh pit than a movie theater. My wife got pelted right in the head with a blue raspberry slushie in the middle of the chaos. Folks were climbing over seats, doing Fortnite dances—it was wild.
So yeah, if you're thinking about seeing the Minecraft movie in theaters, especially with kids—maybe reconsider. I’d wait for the home release unless you're ready for a full on mosh pit.
