North Central Illinois | I knew that squash are very attractive to the adults, but didn't realize the magnitude. In 2023 I had 36 rows of an open pollinated specialty corn with rows 5, 11, and 22 skipped of corn and planted squash in those. In 2024 when I combined with the other fields (wheat followed by double crop buckwheat on one side and soybeans on the other), I planted perpendicular to the prior corn rows in the middle strip. I could see where the squash rows were by corn stunting from root feeding. No substantial issues outside of that strip that was corn/squash the prior year.
Is the attraction of the squash substantial enough to be used to concentrate egg laying in strategic places? I'm intending to continue planting several acres of squash/corn to supply my seed production contract and small wholesale squash market. | |
