Good comments, thanks. I kinda sense the same viewpoints here. The soil is cool and not quite perfectly fit for corn this early in the game, but fit enough to try a bean or two.
So went out late Tuesday and planted corn close to house just to see if there were any bugs to work out of planter. Was surprised how ready the ground was, but only did a couple acres.
Yesterday, got 0.1" early in the morning, but started planting corn in the afternoon with a strong wind and sun thinking the West end of field would be too wet. It wasn't, instead almost perfect. Basically was throwing up a little dust on the East end of field where there's some tile, and no dust on West end with no tile but still mellow and near perfect. Kept going till dark. Surprised, but I think we are still in a slight drought area on the latest map I saw. Heavy fog this morning, but hope to get started again in an hour or two.
Sometimes the only way you really know is to go out and try it. There were some in my area (Hancock Co., Illinois), who put in a field or two of beans right at the end of March or very early April. I'm relieved to not be the only "idiot" in the area anymore, lol. That said, haven't drilled any beans yet with my corn ground ready to go. |
