That's the thing. "The Govt" didn't let it happen. U.S. Companies SOLD OUT OUR JOBS AND FACTORIES all under the guise of shareholder value and maximizing this or that.
Both of those are true. The corporations did what was best for their shareholder profits and the US govt let it happen through "free trade" policies. The corporation did their job in the interest of their shareholders. The US govt did NOT do its job in the interest of the working class citizens of the United States of America. The politicians voted in the interest of Wall Street.
I'll say it once again, Ross Perot was not wrong.
What would you have govt do, prevent companies from doing business outside the U.S.? This isn't on politicians, this is on the companies that sent away the jobs and closed the factories. Hell, some of them built factories here and then shipped them.
Keep tariffs in place to level the playing field vs countries with little or no environmental regulations and little regard for human life.
Doesn't even have to be tariffs on every dollar. Could just tariff the trade imbalance to give them incentive to buy from the US with the USD that they got from us. Exp --- If we buy $440 billion from China and they buy $165 billion from US, only tariff the $275 billion difference.
