NW IL | For "shoulder seasons" I am not convinced that major blends are worth it. After summer grain, silage, or if you have a field that won't be planted until mid-end of May they might be more worth it.
I know people doing winter camelina and saying it works well. Likes to be planted late too. Maybe a few pounds of hairy vetch if you are feeling adventurous, but you won't get full benefit from them if you are trying to plant corn in April.

Depending on how early your beans come off, you might try oats, peas, and a brassica or 2. They won't grow a lot but might stay green until Feb and should eventually winterkill. | |
