E.Central MN | We live in such a sue-happy country that it's a pretty big risk to hire someone who doesn't have proof of insurance in case they get hurt or they cause damage to property. But a lot of us still take that risk rather than paying $5000 to remove a single tree. We had a pine tree that got struck by lightning, there wasn't a safe place to drop it without hitting the house so we put off dealing with it for a few years. We asked a local tree trimming guy (he lives 4 miles away) what he'd charge to come in and take the top off if he didn't have to deal with disposal of the limbs/etc. He gave us a low bid if he could do it when he got time. There were quite a few storms that year so he was busy and didn't get to it. The next spring we checked to see if he was still willing to do it, he stopped by and trimmed a few trees that were hanging over the road and then came back when the yard was firm enough to drive on and cut the pine tree into chunks, my brother paid him more than what he asked. The frustrating part is trying to get rid of decent firewood (not that pine) after you get the trees cut down, I can see why guys just push everything into a pile and burn it.
