| Like you said having a dry climate is definitely key. My granddad ran his year-round on range. grass in the summer and dryland crop stubble in the fall. But their genetics were so different from ours today. I think he quit doing that in the 80s. I know they didn’t worm or vax for anything. Death rates were 15-50% at times.
But at 1700 head, that’s a LOT for 2 people. I’d say just do the best you can and build up your genetics for this, like freking said. I’d hate to see you with the 50% death loss. I’m sure you would too, but it’s probably going to take a few hard years to get things turned around. Definitely look here in Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana for Rams and replacement stock. There’s not many guys that run on range all 12 months out of the year but there’s still a few. Pasture lambing has kind of become a thing of the past, but maybe create your own Facebook group and it might attract like-minded ranchers. | |
