The Sunshine harvester was designed and built in Australia, where strippers were used even before combines. The Australians stuck with the "closed" front header for quite a few years, but they are prone to plugging, especially with weeds. They refer to the headers we use as "open" fronts.
Here is a link to a museum in Australia featuring the Sunshine Harvester and its predecessors.
I am sure Benjamin Holt invented a self-propelled combine in California before this rig was introduced to the field.

How do you get past the black disclaimer screen on your link?

The Holt combines are interesting...as they usually have a Baldwin involved in it.
