AGB - 4/4/2025 19:24 Do you think we will have price gouging? Meaning, if a foreign product comes to the us that is more expensive (because of tariffs or quality), will the domestic manufacturers raise their prices to match the foreign? Not sure if im explaining myself. Will the consumers protection agency try to oversee this? Yes, if a foreign competitor's price goes up due to tariffs, it is the way our system works that companies charge as much as they can to maximize returns to shareholders. Domestic manufacturers will raise prices to match the competition. As an engineer, I used to think that selling prices were determined by taking your manufacturing costs, adding margin for manufacturer, distributor (if any ) and dealer (if any) and that was your selling price. I was very wrong! Selling price is determined by the competition. You can try to differentiate your product from a competitor but it is still the competition that determines a product's price in our system where management is rewarded on maximizing returns to stock holders and stock price. So if a competitor's price goes up due to tariffs you can be sure the domestic manufacturer will raise his price as much as he can. Tariffs raise money from domestic consumers, NOT from foreign countries. Tariffs are a new domestic sales tax and as all sales taxes tariffs affect the average folks much more that the wealthy. |
