The US doesn't have the raw materials to build everything it needs in the US. Not even if you suspended all environmental regulations. If you could do that, it would help, but not in the short term. It takes time to build new mines and processing facilities.

Nor do we have the labor force to do it. And we can't do it ALL with robotics due to the first point.
We have to either severely change our standard of living, or continue with significant imports.

If Trump continues with his current course, it will sour the electorate on his ideas for a decade or more.

It makes no sense for any business to make any investments in the US that will take more than two years to pay off. There will be a different policy in four years, best to batten down the hatches and try to survive that long.

The Chinese infrastructure exists. Most of it can last another four years. Businesses will focus on maintaining that until the next administration, and decide what to do then.

If Trump really wanted to bring manufacturing back to the US, the tariffs would be mostly on finished goods and not raw materials.

But that's not what he did.

He placed tariffs across the board based on trade deficits. That is a move designed to destroy the US.
