Southern MN | For the last 20 years we have been buying 800-1000 pound Holstein steers in spring and butcher in fall. This has worked out fairly well for us. Basically grind whole corn and mix in a little bit of beef supplement from the local feed mill and put into a steer stuffer. We also give them a bale of meadow grass. They can eat either whenever they want. They are in a half dirt half cement feedlot.
I have an opportunity to start buying 2 week old black angus and 2 week old Holstein that are bucket trained from a close by neighbor. (they don't keep any steers past 2 weeks old)
What is the best practice to get them on the stuffer without gorging themselves and getting acidosis?
Also - is there a better dietary plan that can be used for both angus and Holstein? Since we raise strictly for butchering, I want the best quality meat possible, not just fattening them up to sell. I'll probably only ever have 50 or less cattle at a time. Currently we only have 12 but I would like to expand.
Thanks for any advice you can give. | |
