The world would be in a better place if they weee honest and said " look we don't know everything, but this is our best guess with the info we have right now". Instead, they promised that they had all the answers and went after anybody that challenged the slightest detail.

When was the last time you heard a preacher say, "I don't know."

Last Sunday. And that is one of many reasons I keep going. The quest for knowledge, as well as the transparency. He has like 9 different versions of the Bible and if something isnt clear, he'll try a different version to see if there is any clarification. He also knows quite a bit of Latin so he can reference how it was originally written.

I say “I don’t know,” quite often. Additionally, not to be persnickety about it, but the Bible was originally written in Hebrew and Koine Greek with a sprinkling of Aramaic scattered around. The first Latin translation did not come along until a few hundred years later. Although, I’m sure an extensive knowledge of Latin would be helpful.
Edit to clarify: Jerome’s Vulgate was not the first Latin translation. It was a “standardization” of what might be called piecemeal translations of portions of the Bible.
