30-06 has been around for more than a century and is still an old warhorse (literally). Better than the 308 in every way in my opinion. I have more ought sixes than any other rifle caliber.

If you want flatter shooting yet, the 300 win mag is the next step up, though I prefer the 300 WBY.

22LR, 22-250, 243, 30-06, and 375 WBY is the perfect set of cartridges in my opinion. Will tackle anything that roams the earth with ease and efficiency.

If you are shooting long range, I could make the case for a 338 Lapua. Though an old black powder 45-120 Sharps will be just an effective with it's rainbow trajectory and big cast bullet.

I disagree—-‘06 was the deal for longer range target—-until 308 came out. I’ve got a friend, was on army shooting team, then did the camp lejeune competition as vacation——showed me a target size of paper plate, 3 shots, 3 holes, 1,000yds, iron sights. Think rifle made in Austria?

Are you familiar with Kirby Allen’s hot rods?
