Clark, SD
I love my 308, in my opinion there isn't a more versatile cartridge out there. Huge benefit of it is theres a huge selection and will likely never be a shortage of it as well as it being fairly cheap.

The fact that it is the go to cartridge for the armed forces for long range precision shooting should say it all. Yes it has significant drop at distance...everyone out there does. But a 308 can easily be pushed out to over a 1000 yards no problem with the correct dope. I feel the newer cartridges (6.5prc, creedmore, grendel) are more fads then ones that will stick around much like the WSM series.

With all of that being said, just for deer hunting where most if not all shots will be 300 yards or less, Id go with whatever is the cheapest.

If shooting long range thats a different story, especially if money isnt an option, I just bought a 408 thats sub MOA out to 2500 yards that comes out to $17.50 a round.
