Split the difference and get a 7mm 08. Still the short action with a little bigger bullet than the 243.
Yup, I’ll second the 7oughteight. Fabulous light recoiling round. Will flatten elk if loaded heavy for caliber. Another fabulous round that’s been around forever is the 6.5/55 Swede. Punches way beyond its weight.


I’ll third the 7mm-08. I started with this cartridge in my Encore pistol, like it so much that I use it in a rifle, now that WI has made rifles legal statewide. I had crop damage tags for a few years, lost count of how many deer that rifle has killed. Most of them drop in their tracks.

Edit- Realistically, the deer has no idea of the size bullet that went through their boiler room. Dead is dead. Anything from .223 on up will kill a deer with proper shot placement. Pick one you like, for any reason you choose.
