Brakes should be like new! You should get off lightly.

I did brakes on that 4440 I mentioned and 3 other old tractors one summer. Ended up replacing all of them….. both sides. I don’t buy cheap transmission fluid anymore! Just not willing to take the chance! Of course you have to change it if it ever gets moisture etc.

The new type replacement brake linings that JD has been using for about the last 35-40 years now do not hold up to moisture or something. I had pads with thick linings that I could flake the material off the backing plate with a fingernail! I think the old black composite linings could stand that sort of adversity better, but they eventually give up the ghost and the rivets get loose followed by the linings breaking up.

It’ll sure be the time to inspect brakes very closely because you’ll already be right there. I would not be in any hurry to change out old style to modern unless they show signs of loose rivets, worn thin close to rivet heads, chunks missing etc.

JD sells both rivet-on replacement pads for your old parts or new bonded lining pads and pressure plate. I used the riveted type and set the rivets with a rivet setting punch and hammer. Used to have access to a rivet squeezer press but no longer. The hammer and punch worked fine on the steel backer plates the new linings are bonded to. On the old composite linings, the rivets couldn’t be clinched too tightly without crushing the material. That’s where the foot operated rivet squeezing press came in. It gave you some feel for the process.
