In 1989 my college professor showed us a video of an automated robotic rice harvester in Japan targeted toward small farms. I can't remember how the field was opened up but after a perimeter pass the unit just used whisker feelers to navigate the field. Drawback was the bagged rice was dropped on the ground so the farmer had to pick them up when he returned? Pretty impressive for 1976 when the video was created.
