ecsd | My local coop demoed an autonomous fertilizer spreader. I talked to the guy running it. He wasn’t impressed with it. When he got to the field he had to drive the perimeter with his pickup to make a boundary. Any obstacles in the field, like power poles, water holes, rock piles, etc. he had to drive around. He said some field’s by the time he drove around all the obstacles, he could have spread it with a regular spreader. He also said it was a pain to transport it from field to field, so they always hauled it on a lowboy. They had a lot of break downs with it also. He said that they didn’t really gain anything since they still had to have a guy there to watch it and do perimeters. They never bought it, and I haven’t seen one around since.
They’re a lot of things you can’t replace a human for.
