What is your yield goal? How are you currently applying N? If 1. is urea for N I think it is a horrible idea. As it needs to be rained in with a decent sized rain. If it rained constantly during corn planting time to get urea rained in you would likely have wheat averages above 70. It would be better to use ammonium nitrate as it will not volatilize. It is probably more expensive and you would have to handle it yourself as I do not think there are any coops that carry it. It would be delivered to you in semi load quantities. If I was going to plan on using urea I would apply it during the winter when it is cooler and more likely to get some rain when it is predicted. I think best choice is striptill NH3 with dry P in Dec/Jan, or a no-till NH3 applicator like the DMR sometime before planting corn. NH3 is the cheapest form of N which is a something that a landlord would want to hear if they are paying part of the bill. |
