Cen Ks | If a landlord (sharecrop) asks questions about nitrogen application, how should application methods be presented to him?
Keep in mind this no till, semi-arid environment. Yields can vary widely for year to year based on rainfall and excessive heat events.
Some local methods are:
1. A few neighbors have the coop blow on everything ahead of the planter & call it done.
2. Some neighbors apply most or all the N at planting time.
3. A few might side dress or Y-drop N on.
My opinions: option 1 quick & easy; but can be risky terms of N use efficiency.
Option 2&3 may be a bit more labor up front, but I feel precision placing the N (in tight clay soils) is advantageous over pre-plant broadcast.
Can I tell my landlord that my extra work & attention to detail is potentially getting him better ROI on his fertilizer bill?
Some years ago on Midwest Labs fertilizer recommendations, there was a note that all recs were for b-cast. The recs could be trimmed a significant % for banding or precision placed applications.
Will I get myself in trouble if my landlord's coffee shop buddies tell him b-cast is the right way?
TIA
