Grass always greens up before alfalfa. It's a legume and not a grass


Bingo, grass grows with the increase in sunshine. Alfalfa grow with an accumulation of GDD, so if you've had colder than average temps, you got less GDD. BTW, growth degree days temp is 41 for alfalfa, which is lower than corn.
